Quartzite vs. Granite: Which Stone Holds Up Better in a Busy Kitchen?

Granite has been the king of kitchen countertops for decades, but quartzite has been winning converts fast — especially among homeowners who love the look of marble but want something tougher. So how do these two natural stones actually compare in a busy, real-world kitchen?

Hardness: Quartzite Wins

On the Mohs hardness scale, quartzite (7 out of 10) is harder than granite (6–6.5). In practical terms, quartzite is extremely resistant to scratching — even more so than granite. If your kitchen sees heavy knife work, rolling pins, and sliding ceramics, quartzite has the edge.

Stain Resistance: Slight Edge to Granite

Both stones are porous and need sealing, but granite’s denser varieties tend to resist staining slightly better than some quartzites. That said, a properly sealed quartzite performs excellently. The real variable isn’t granite vs. quartzite — it’s the specific slab.

Heat Tolerance: Both Excellent

Both granite and quartzite handle heat far better than quartz (engineered stone) or solid surface. You should still use trivets — thermal shock can crack any stone — but a hot pot briefly set down won’t phase either one.

Appearance

Granite offers dramatic speckles, veins, and movement in hundreds of colors. Quartzite often delivers the soft, elegant veining people love in marble — whites, grays, and subtle golds — with far better durability. If you want the marble look without the marble maintenance, quartzite is the answer.

Care Needs: Nearly Identical

  • Seal regularly (every 1–3 years; do the water test twice a year)
  • Clean with mild soap and water; avoid vinegar, bleach, and abrasive scrubs
  • Wipe spills promptly, especially oils and acids
  • Use cutting boards and trivets

Cost

Quartzite typically runs 10–20% more than granite, reflecting its popularity and the difficulty of quarrying and fabricating such a hard stone. Both are investments that add real value to a home.

The Verdict

For maximum scratch resistance and marble-like beauty: quartzite. For the widest selection, slightly easier maintenance, and lower cost: granite. You can’t go wrong — both will outlast the kitchen around them with basic care.
