Wiping a stone kitchen countertop during daily cleaning

The 10-Minute Daily Routine That Keeps Stone Countertops Looking New

Stone countertops don’t demand much — but they do reward consistency. Ten minutes a day and a few periodic check-ins will keep granite, quartz, quartzite, or marble looking showroom-new for decades. Here’s the routine.

Daily (10 Minutes)

  1. Clear the decks. Move small appliances, cutting boards, and clutter off the counters.
  2. Wipe down. Using a soft cloth or sponge with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap, wipe the entire surface, including the backsplash edge where grime collects.
  3. Rinse-wipe. Go over it again with a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue, which can build into a film over time.
  4. Dry. Buff dry with a microfiber cloth. This prevents water spots and leaves a streak-free shine.
  5. Spot-check. Look for any spills you missed — especially around the cooktop and sink — and wipe them now.

Weekly (15 Minutes)

  • Do the daily routine, then pay extra attention to seams, the sink cutout edge, and behind faucets where water and soap accumulate.
  • For granite and other natural stone, use a pH-neutral stone cleaner for a deeper clean.
  • Check under dish racks and coffee makers for trapped moisture.

Monthly (5 Minutes)

  • The water test (natural stone only): Sprinkle water on your granite, marble, or quartzite. If it beads, your sealer is fine. If it soaks in and darkens the stone, schedule a reseal.
  • Inspect caulk lines around sinks and backsplashes. Re-caulk if you see gaps.

Annually

  • Reseal natural stone if the water test says so (most Atlanta kitchens: every 1–3 years).
  • Give quartz a once-over for any resin discoloration near heat sources and adjust habits (trivets!) if needed.

The Habits That Matter Most

  • Wipe spills promptly — especially oil, wine, coffee, and tomato.
  • Always use cutting boards and trivets.
  • Never use vinegar, bleach, or abrasive scrubs on natural stone.
  • Lift, don’t slide, heavy ceramics and small appliances.

Consistency beats intensity. A gentle daily wipe-down does more for your countertops than an aggressive monthly scrub ever will.
