Water droplets beading on sealed granite

Do You Really Need to Reseal Granite Every Year? Myth vs. Fact

“Reseal your granite every year” is one of the most repeated pieces of countertop advice — and one of the most misleading. The truth is more nuanced, and understanding it will save you time, money, and unnecessary chemistry on your counters.

The Myth

The myth: all granite needs resealing annually, no exceptions. This likely started as a safe blanket recommendation — and, not coincidentally, it sells a lot of sealer.

The Fact

How often granite needs resealing depends on three things:

1. The stone itself. Dense, dark granites (like Absolute Black) are barely porous and can go 3–5 years between sealings. Lighter, more porous varieties absorb more and may need annual attention.

2. How you use your kitchen. A busy family kitchen with daily cooking wears sealer faster than a lightly used one. Acids (tomato, citrus, vinegar-based cleaners) break sealers down quickest.

3. The sealer quality. A premium penetrating sealer properly applied lasts far longer than a bargain spray-and-wipe product.

The Only Test That Matters: Water

Forget the calendar — test the stone:

  1. Sprinkle water on the countertop in a few spots.
  2. Wait 10–15 minutes.
  3. Beading = sealed. Darkening/soaking in = time to reseal.

Do this twice a year and you’ll never reseal too early or too late.

Signs Your Sealer Is Failing

  • Water no longer beads
  • Spills seem to “soak in” faster than they used to
  • The stone looks duller or darker in high-use areas
  • Stains appearing where they didn’t before

Bottom Line

Don’t reseal on a schedule — reseal on evidence. The water test takes two minutes and tells you exactly what your granite needs.
