5 Granite Countertop Mistakes That Lead to Stains (and How to Avoid Them)
Granite is tough, but it’s not invincible. Most granite stains we see in Metro Atlanta homes come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. Here are the five biggest offenders — and how to fix each one.
Mistake 1: Skipping the Sealer (or Waiting Too Long to Reseal)
Unsealed granite absorbs liquids like a sponge. The fix: do the water test twice a year — sprinkle water on the surface and wait 10–15 minutes. Beading means you’re protected; soaking in means it’s time to reseal. Most kitchens need it every 1–3 years.
Mistake 2: Letting Spills Sit
Red wine, coffee, cooking oil, and tomato sauce are the usual suspects. On sealed granite you have a window of time — but not forever. The fix: wipe spills as soon as you notice them, especially oils and acids.
Mistake 3: Cleaning with Vinegar or Bleach
Vinegar’s acidity breaks down granite sealer over time, and bleach can discolor the stone. The fix: clean with warm water and mild dish soap, or a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
Mistake 4: Using the Counter as a Cutting Board
Knives dull quickly on granite — and repeated cutting wears through sealer, creating entry points for stains. The fix: always use a cutting board.
Mistake 5: Placing Hot Pans Directly on the Surface
Granite handles heat better than most materials, but extreme thermal shock can crack or discolor it. The fix: use trivets and hot pads every time.
Already Have a Stain?
Most granite stains can be drawn out with a poultice (a paste of baking soda and water, or baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for organic stains). Cover with plastic wrap, wait 24 hours, and repeat if needed. For deep or widespread staining, professional help is the fastest route.
