Wiping down a white quartz countertop with a microfiber cloth

How to Clean Quartz Countertops Without Damaging Them

Quartz countertops are popular for good reason — they’re non-porous, stain-resistant, and never need sealing. But “low maintenance” is not “no maintenance.” Using the wrong cleaners or habits can dull the finish or even damage the resin binders. Here’s how to keep quartz looking new.

Daily Cleaning (2 Minutes)

For everyday cleaning, all you need is warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, and a soft cloth or sponge. Wipe down the surface, rinse with clean water, and dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots. That’s it — no special sprays required.

Deeper Cleaning

For stuck-on food or grease, use a non-abrasive cleaner made for stone or quartz, or a paste of baking soda and water applied gently with a soft cloth. For stubborn spots, lay a damp cloth over the area for a few minutes to loosen residue before wiping — never scrape with metal tools.

Products to NEVER Use on Quartz

  • Bleach or harsh disinfectants — can discolor the resin and dull the finish
  • Abrasive scrubs or scouring pads — scratch the surface permanently
  • Oven cleaner, paint stripper, or nail polish remover — chemicals that attack the resin binders
  • Highly alkaline or acidic cleaners — including vinegar used repeatedly

Heat: Quartz’s Weak Spot

Unlike granite, quartz contains resin that can scorch or discolor under extreme heat. Always use trivets or hot pads under pots, pans, and slow cookers. A brief encounter with a warm plate is fine — a ripping-hot cast iron skillet is not.

Preventing Stains and Damage

  • Wipe up spills promptly, especially coffee, wine, and turmeric
  • Use cutting boards — quartz resists scratches well, but knives will dull faster on stone
  • Avoid dropping heavy objects on edges and corners, the most vulnerable spots

The Bottom Line

Mild soap, soft cloth, trivets, cutting boards. Follow that simple formula and your quartz countertops will look beautiful for decades.
